Parco Regionale del Delta del Po (Po Delta Regional Park)
Just 30 kilometres east of Rovigo, the Po Delta Regional Park is a vast, otherworldly landscape of lagoons, reed beds, sand spits and migratory bird colonies that rivals the Camargue in drama and far surpasses it in tranquillity. Flamingos are not a metaphor — they genuinely wade here.
Birdwatching and Boat Trips on the Lagoons
The Valle Bertuzzi and Valle di Comacchio lagoons within the Veneto section of the park are among Italy's most important wetland habitats. Between October and March, tens of thousands of migratory birds — including greater flamingos, spoonbills, marsh harriers and white egrets — use the shallow waters as a staging post.
Guided boat tours depart from the small town of Porto Tolle and from Taglio di Po, lasting between 90 minutes and three hours. Local guides know exactly where the flamingo flocks are feeding on any given morning, making the experience far more rewarding than self-guided exploration.
Cycling the Delta Levees and Visiting Sacca di Scardovari
A network of flat cycling paths runs along the earthen levees (argini) that hold back the river channels, offering long, uninterrupted views across the delta plain with almost no traffic. Bike rental is available in Taglio di Po and Porto Tolle.
The Sacca di Scardovari is a large, shallow lagoon famous for its mussel and clam farming — you can see the wooden stakes of the mussel beds stretching across the water from the levee road. Several local restaurants on the lagoon edge serve spaghetti alle vongole made with clams harvested that morning.
Sunsets over the delta are extraordinary: the flat horizon, the silhouettes of reed beds and the pink-orange sky reflected in still water produce the kind of image that looks like it was filtered but absolutely wasn't.
