Paese (Old Town Riccione)
While most visitors never leave the seafront strip, a ten-minute uphill walk takes you into the Paese — Riccione's original medieval village perched on a low ridge above the coast. Terracotta rooftops, a Romanesque parish church and trattorias that have fed fishermen's families for generations await up here.
Chiesa di San Martino and the Historic Core
The parish church of San Martino, documented as early as the 11th century, anchors the old town with its simple stone façade and a bell tower visible from much of the coast below. Inside, a 16th-century painted crucifix and carved wooden choir stalls are worth a quiet look.
The lanes around Piazza Dante are lined with low stone houses that predate the tourist boom by centuries. Flower boxes, washing lines and the smell of Sunday ragù drifting from open windows make this feel like a genuinely lived-in Italian village rather than a heritage set-piece.
Villa Mussolini and the Panoramic Terrace
The salmon-pink Villa Mussolini — where Benito Mussolini spent summers with his family in the 1930s — sits on the ridge's edge and is now a cultural centre hosting exhibitions and concerts. The terrace in front of it offers one of the best free views on the entire Rimini Riviera: the coast curves north towards Rimini and south towards Cattolica in a single sweeping arc.
Entry to the villa's exhibition spaces is usually free or costs a nominal €2–3; check the Comune di Riccione website for the current programme before visiting.
