Château du Haut-Ribeaupierre
Three medieval castles crown the forested ridge above Ribeauvillé, and Haut-Ribeaupierre — the highest of the trio — rewards the climb with jaw-dropping panoramas over the Alsatian plain stretching all the way to the Black Forest. The crumbling sandstone towers date to the 11th century and feel genuinely wild, with no railing-and-audio-guide polish to dilute the drama.
The Three Castles Trail
A well-marked hiking loop from the town centre links all three ruins — Saint-Ulrich, Girsberg and Haut-Ribeaupierre — in roughly 2.5 hours of moderate walking through oak and pine forest. Saint-Ulrich is the best-preserved, with a Romanesque great hall you can still step inside.
Start early in summer: the path gets busy by mid-morning and the ridgeline has almost no shade. Sturdy shoes are essential — the final scramble to Haut-Ribeaupierre involves loose rock.
History Written in Sandstone
The castles were the ancestral seat of the powerful Lords of Ribeaupierre, who controlled the region for centuries and gave the town its name. Look for carved heraldic details on the Saint-Ulrich gatehouse that have survived 700 years of Alsatian weather.
