Belvédère du Zahnacker
Tucked above the Zahnacker Grand Cru vineyard — one of only two tri-cépage Grands Crus in Alsace — this modest belvedere delivers one of the most expansive views on the entire Route des Vins without requiring a serious hike. On a clear day the Vosges ridgeline, the Rhine plain, and the distant Jura mountains of Switzerland all appear in a single sweep.
Getting There on Foot or by Bike
From the centre of Ribeauvillé, follow the signed Sentier Viticole (vineyard trail) uphill through the Geisberg and Osterberg Grands Crus for about 40 minutes on foot, or 20 minutes by e-bike. The path is well-surfaced gravel, passable in trainers outside of wet weather.
Several wooden benches face the view, making this a perfect picnic spot — buy a bottle of Trimbach or Sipp Mack Riesling from the cave in town and pair it with a slice of Munster from the market below.
Light and Seasons
Autumn is the undisputed highlight: from mid-October the vines turn gold and amber, the harvest teams move through the rows, and the air smells faintly of fermenting must. Photographers should come at golden hour when the low sun rakes across the vine rows and the plain glows orange.
Spring is equally rewarding — the vines are a vivid acid-green against the dark Vosges forest, and the castle ruins are clearly visible on the ridge above.
