Mercado Municipal de Puerto de la Cruz
Tucked into a handsome early-20th-century building two blocks from Plaza del Charco, the Mercado Municipal is where local families have shopped for generations — a fragrant, colourful hall piled with Canarian papas arrugadas potatoes, finger-sized bananas, fresh goat's cheese and hand-rolled mojo sauce.
What to buy and taste
The ground floor is devoted to fruit and vegetables, and the variety is staggering: five varieties of Canarian banana, pineapples from La Palma, giant avocados, purple sweet potatoes and papaya the size of rugby balls. Vendors are generous with samples — just ask.
Upstairs, the meat and cheese counters are where serious cooks come. Look for fresh queso de cabra (goat's cheese) from the Teno massif in the island's northwest, and ask for bienmesabe — a thick almond-honey cream sold in jars that makes the best edible souvenir you'll find in the whole archipelago.
Timing your visit
Saturday mornings are the busiest and most atmospheric, when a small outdoor extension of the market spills onto the surrounding streets and local farmers bring produce directly from their plots on the Orotava Valley slopes above town.
By 13:00 most stalls begin packing up, so aim to arrive between 09:00 and 12:00 for the best choice. The adjacent Calle del Lomo has several traditional tapas bars that make a natural continuation of the market visit.
