Loro Parque
What began in 1972 as a parrot collection has grown into one of Europe's most respected zoological parks, housing the world's largest collection of parrots alongside gorillas, tigers, killer whales, sea lions and a walk-through penguin tunnel chilled to Antarctic temperatures.
More than a zoo
Loro Parque consistently ranks among the world's top zoos for animal welfare and conservation. Its Penguin Planet exhibit replicates Antarctic conditions for a colony of gentoo and king penguins, while the gorilla habitat is a lush multi-level forest environment that regularly produces successful births.
The park's parrot shows remain legendary — trained macaws, cockatoos and Amazon parrots perform free-flight routines above the audience in the open-air theatre, a genuinely jaw-dropping spectacle for visitors of all ages.
Getting there and planning your day
Loro Parque sits at Punta Brava, about 3 km west of the old town centre. A free shuttle bus (the Loro Parque Express) departs regularly from Plaza del Charco in the heart of Puerto de la Cruz — look for the distinctive green bus.
Plan for a full day: the park covers 13.5 hectares and the animal shows run on a timed schedule. Picking up the show timetable at the entrance and planning your route around it is the smartest move.
