Lago Martínez (Lido San Telmo)
Designed by the visionary Lanzarote artist César Manrique and opened in 1977, Lago Martínez is one of the most architecturally stunning lido complexes in the world — a series of interconnected saltwater pools, black volcanic rock islands and white sun terraces perched right on the Atlantic seafront.
Art, architecture and saltwater
Manrique conceived the complex as a living artwork: sweeping white curves frame five pools of turquoise seawater, punctuated by volcanic rock sculptures, tropical palms and vivid bougainvillea. Every angle is a photograph waiting to happen.
The centrepiece is a large central pool with a floating stage used for summer concerts, while a basement-level casino and café-bar add an unexpectedly glamorous layer to a day at the lido.
Making the most of your visit
Arrive early on summer mornings to claim a sun lounger before the crowds build. The complex faces west, so late-afternoon light turns the pools a glittering gold — prime time for photos.
A small entrance fee covers all pools and access to the volcanic rock terraces that jut out over the crashing Atlantic. Snack bars and a proper restaurant mean you can comfortably spend a full day here without leaving.
