The Ruins Themselves
The apse of the former Dominican convent survived demolition in the 19th century and now stands as a protected monument, its soaring Gothic arches framing views of open sky and the surrounding old-town rooftops. Carved heraldic shields and medieval tombstones line the interior walls — a silent record of Pontevedra's noble families.
The space hosts occasional outdoor concerts and cultural events in summer, when the acoustics of the stone walls create an unforgettable atmosphere. Even on a quiet Tuesday morning, standing in the roofless nave produces a genuine sense of awe.
The Museo de Pontevedra Next Door
Connected to the ruins, the Museo de Pontevedra spreads across six historic buildings and houses one of Galicia's finest collections — from Celtic gold torques and Roman artefacts to an outstanding gallery of paintings including works by Alfonso Castelao, Galicia's beloved artist and nationalist icon.
The museum's collection of Galician silverwork and the reproduction of a 19th-century Galician kitchen are particularly absorbing. Entry is free for EU citizens and costs just €1.50 for others — an extraordinary bargain for the depth of what is on offer.
