Mercado Municipal de Pontevedra (Mercado de Abastos)
Tucked inside a handsome 20th-century iron-and-granite building just off Praza da Verdura, Pontevedra's Mercado de Abastos is where chefs, grandmothers and curious travellers all converge before 10 am. The stalls overflow with percebes, razor clams, octopus and vegetables pulled from Galician soil that morning.
The Stalls Worth Pushing Through the Crowds For
The fish and shellfish hall is the undisputed star — vendors in white aprons arrange glistening spider crabs, live barnacles and whole turbot with the pride of jewellers displaying diamonds. Prices are chalked on boards in euros per kilo and haggling, while not expected, is warmly tolerated for large purchases.
The vegetable and cheese stalls on the upper level showcase Tetilla and San Simón da Costa cheeses alongside grelos (turnip greens), Padrón peppers and enormous heads of garlic braided into decorative ropes. Even if you have no kitchen, walking these aisles is a masterclass in Galician cuisine.
Eating Right at the Market
Several small tapas bars ring the market's exterior, serving pulpo á feira (octopus with paprika and olive oil) on wooden boards from around 11 am. Order a small glass of Ribeiro white wine alongside — it is the traditional local pairing and costs less than two euros.
The market is busiest and best-stocked Tuesday to Saturday mornings; Sunday sees a reduced but still lively session. Arrive by 9 am on a Saturday to see the full spectacle before the best shellfish sells out.
