Praza da Ferrería

A Square Built for Lingering
The scallop-shell-shaped Capilla de la Peregrina anchors the southern end of the square — a Baroque-Neoclassical chapel completed in 1778 that doubles as a landmark on the Camino Portugués. Its distinctive curved façade and twin bell towers make it instantly recognisable even on overcast Galician mornings.
The arcaded northern edge of the square shelters café terraces where locals read newspapers and pilgrims rest aching feet. The seamless blend of sacred and social life here is quintessentially Galician — nobody is in a hurry, and that mood is contagious.
Where Old Town Meets Living Culture
Praza da Ferrería connects directly to Praza da Verdura and the tangle of pedestrianised lanes that make Pontevedra's casco histórico one of Spain's most celebrated car-free centres. Street musicians, flower sellers and impromptu pilgrim gatherings animate the space on weekend afternoons.
The square is especially magical at dusk when the warm granite glows amber under the streetlights and the terraces fill with the clink of Albariño glasses. Plan to arrive around 7 pm and simply let the evening unfold around you.
