Puig de Maria Hermitage Viewpoint
Rising 333 metres above the plain just south of Pollença town, the Puig de Maria is crowned by a 14th-century hermitage that still houses a small community of nuns — and offers arguably the finest 360-degree view in northern Mallorca. The rocky summit takes in Cap de Formentor, the Bay of Pollença, the Bay of Alcúdia and the full spine of the Serra de Tramuntana simultaneously.
The Hike Up
The most popular trail starts from the car park on the PM-220 road south of Pollença town and climbs steadily through pine and holm oak for about 45 minutes. The path is well-marked with stone cairns and paint blazes, though it becomes rocky and exposed near the summit — trekking poles help on the descent.
An alternative route begins from the edge of Pollença old town itself, adding roughly 20 minutes to the hike but letting you start directly from the café-lined streets of the centre.
At the Summit
The hermitage complex includes a simple restaurant-bar where the resident community serves basic meals and cold drinks — a bowl of sopa mallorquina (vegetable and bread soup) eaten on the stone terrace with that view is an experience worth the entire climb. You can also stay overnight in one of the hermitage's spartan but atmospheric pilgrim cells for around €25 per person.
The viewpoint is best at dawn when the bay below is glassy and the Cap de Formentor peninsula glows pink, or in the last hour of light when the Tramuntana ridgeline turns violet. Bring a layer — the summit catches wind even on warm days.
