Cap de Formentor & Mirador des Colomer

The Cap de Formentor peninsula shoots 20 kilometres into the Mediterranean from Pollença Bay like a rocky finger, its cliffs plunging 200 metres straight into the sea and its narrow road threading through pine forest to a lighthouse at the very tip. The Mirador des Colomer lookout, about halfway along the peninsula, provides what many consider the single most dramatic coastal view in the Balearic

Mirador des Colomer

A short stepped path from the MA-2210 road leads up to a series of stone viewing platforms perched above sheer cliffs, looking down onto the Es Colomer sea stack — a vertical rock pillar rising from the deep blue water below. Eleonora's falcons nest on these cliffs and can often be seen riding thermals at eye level from the viewpoint between May and October.

The light here is extraordinary: the sea shifts from turquoise in the shallows around the stack to deep cobalt further out, and the cliff faces glow ochre and rust against it. Morning light from the east illuminates the cliffs most dramatically.

The Drive to the Lighthouse

The road beyond the mirador narrows dramatically and winds through fragrant pine forest, with occasional heart-stopping glimpses of the sea hundreds of metres below through the trees. The Far de Formentor lighthouse at the tip has been guiding ships since 1863 and sits at the end of a small beach cove — Platja de Formentor, one of Mallorca's most beautiful pine-backed beaches, is passed on the way.

Between June 15 and September 15 private vehicles are restricted on the peninsula road — a shuttle bus service (Bus Marí or the green line from Port de Pollença) runs regularly and is actually a more relaxing way to experience the drive. Book tickets online in advance during peak weeks.
