Calvari Staircase & Oratori de la Mare de Déu del Puig

A monumental cypress-lined staircase of 365 steps climbs straight up from the old town to a tiny hilltop chapel, rewarding pilgrims and curious travellers alike with one of Mallorca's most cinematic ascents. The ritual of the climb, the scent of cypress resin and the hush at the top make this far more than a workout.

The Climb

Each of the 365 steps is said to represent a day of the year, and locals traditionally walk them barefoot on Good Friday in a procession that has wound up this hill for centuries. The staircase is shaded in places by ancient cypress trees whose roots grip the stone walls on either side, giving the whole ascent a cathedral-like atmosphere even under open sky.

The steps are uneven and steep in sections, so wear grip-soled shoes and take your time — the journey is genuinely the point here, not just the destination.

The Chapel & the View

At the summit, the 18th-century oratory is small and whitewashed, its interior cool and smelling faintly of candle wax. A wooden statue of the Virgin inside has been venerated by Pollença families for generations, and small votive offerings left by locals give the space an intimate, living quality that no tourist brochure can fully capture.

Step outside and the panorama opens across the terracotta rooftops of Pollença, the flat agricultural plain stretching toward the bay, and the Serra de Tramuntana ridgeline to the west. Arrive at golden hour and the light turns everything amber.
