Pollença Sunday Market (Mercat Setmanal)
Every Sunday morning, Plaça Major and the surrounding streets of Pollença old town transform into one of Mallorca's most authentic weekly markets, where local farmers, artisan producers and craft sellers set up stalls by 8 a.m. Unlike the souvenir-heavy markets of Alcúdia or Palma, this one still draws genuine Mallorcan regulars buying their week's produce.
What to Buy
Look for strings of dried sobrassada sausage hanging from wooden frames, mounds of local almonds and figs, fresh goat's cheese from farms in the Tramuntana foothills, and the island's famously sweet red peppers. Olive oil pressed from centuries-old trees is sold in unlabelled bottles by farmers who will let you taste before you buy.
On the craft side, Mallorcan llengos fabric (the island's traditional woven textile in bold geometric patterns) turns up on tablecloths, bags and cushion covers at prices far below what you'd pay in Palma boutiques.
How to Do It Right
Arrive before 9 a.m. to beat the tour-group rush and to catch the best of the produce stalls before serious local shoppers pick them clean. The market officially runs until around 1 p.m., but quality and atmosphere peak in the first two hours.
After shopping, pull a chair at any of the café terraces ringing Plaça Major — Bar Español is a favourite with locals — and order a café amb llet and an ensaïmada to watch the market ebb and flow around you.
