Whale and Dolphin Watching from Los Cristianos Harbour

The deep submarine canyon that runs just a few kilometres off the Tenerife south coast is one of Europe's most reliable year-round habitats for pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins — and Los Cristianos harbour is the best departure point to reach it. Responsible, small-boat operators run two-to-three-hour excursions that routinely deliver close encounters with resident pilot whale pods, often alon

What you will see

Short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) live here permanently — the canyon provides the cold, deep water and abundant squid they need — so sightings are genuinely reliable regardless of season. Pods of 10 to 30 animals are common, and the whales are accustomed to respectful boats maintaining the legally required 60-metre distance.

Bottlenose dolphins frequently join the excursions, sometimes bow-riding alongside the vessel. In summer, look for loggerhead turtles basking at the surface, and keep an eye out for the occasional fin whale or sperm whale in the deeper water further offshore.

Choosing a responsible operator

Look for operators certified by the Canarian Government's Reserva Marina scheme and flying the 'Whale Watch Canarias' quality flag — these boats adhere to strict approach protocols that protect the animals and, in practice, also produce calmer, longer sightings. Katrin B and Freebird Excursions are two established names departing from Los Cristianos muelle.

Avoid any operator offering swimming with dolphins or advertising guaranteed touching — both are illegal in Spanish waters and a sign of poor animal-welfare standards. The best encounters are passive ones, with engines cut and whales approaching on their own terms.

Practical details

Most excursions depart at 10 am and 2 pm from the Los Cristianos ferry terminal area; the trip lasts 2.5–3 hours and covers 15–20 nautical miles. Morning departures tend to have calmer seas and better light for photography.

Book directly at the harbour kiosks the evening before or online; prices typically run €35–45 per adult including light refreshments. The harbour is a 20-minute walk along the promenade from Playa de las Américas or a €6 taxi.
