What to buy
The cheese stalls are the star attraction: look for queso de cabra ahumado (smoked goat's cheese) from the Guía de Isora highlands and the semi-cured queso majorero brought over from Fuerteventura — both sold by the wedge at prices far below resort delis.
Seasonal fruit is outstanding: Canarian bananas (platanos) are smaller, sweeter and more intensely flavoured than the imported variety; in autumn, look for local prickly pears (tunas) and cherimoya (custard apple) from the Orotava Valley farms.
The atmosphere
Saturday mornings are the liveliest, when farmers from the interior municipalities of Granadilla de Abona and Vilaflor bring down their produce and the market spills out into the surrounding streets. Locals linger over paper cups of café con leche from the market bar while debating the ripeness of tomatoes.
The fish section — tucked toward the back — is a lesson in what the Atlantic actually produces: vieja (parrotfish), cherne (wreckfish), and lapas (limpets) destined for the grill sit alongside glistening tuna loins.
Getting there and practicalities
Las Chafiras is about 7 km northeast of Playa de las Américas; TITSA bus 111 (direction San Isidro) stops nearby. By car, take the TF-28 north and follow signs for San Miguel — the market is signposted in the village centre.
The market is busiest from 8 am to 1 pm on Saturdays; a quieter mid-week visit (Tuesday or Thursday) still turns up good produce but fewer farmers' stalls.
