Terme di Saturnia Natural Hot Springs
Thirty kilometres northwest of Pitigliano, the Cascate del Mulino at Saturnia are among Italy's most spectacular free natural thermal springs — a series of milky turquoise pools and waterfalls tumbling over tufa terraces at a constant 37.5°C, open to anyone at any hour with no ticket required. They are genuinely one of Tuscany's unmissable natural experiences.
The Free Cascate del Mulino
The Cascate del Mulino sit beside an old mill on the road into Saturnia village and are entirely free and accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The sulphurous water emerges from the earth at a constant 37.5°C and flows through a series of natural travertine pools before cascading over low waterfalls — the effect is of an open-air spa that nature built and forgot to charge for.
Arrive before 9:00 in summer to claim a good pool before the crowds build, or come at dusk when the light turns the water an extraordinary shade of jade and most day-trippers have left. In winter, with mist rising from the warm water into cold air, the scene is almost surreal.
Combining Saturnia with Pitigliano
The drive between Pitigliano and Saturnia takes about 35 minutes on quiet country roads through olive groves and vineyards — it makes a perfect half-day addition to any Pitigliano itinerary, especially if you time the springs for early morning before returning to town for lunch.
The village of Saturnia itself is worth a quick wander: the Terme di Saturnia spa hotel (the upmarket alternative to the free pools) has a good restaurant open to non-guests, and the small Etruscan walls around the village perimeter are an underrated detour.
If the Cascate are crowded, the smaller, less-known Gorello pools a few hundred metres upstream on the same stream offer a quieter alternative — follow the path along the left bank of the Gorello river.
