Belvedere di Pitigliano at Sunset
There is one viewpoint in the Maremma that travel photographers return to again and again, and it sits on the SS74 state road just west of Pitigliano's main gate — a simple stone parapet with a view that makes grown adults stop mid-sentence. The entire town, its tufa cliff and the deep green gorge below fill the frame with no effort required.
Where to Stand and When
The main belvedere is a wide, paved pull-off on the SS74 about 300 metres west of Porta Sovana, signposted simply as 'Belvedere'. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset when the low Tuscan sun turns the tufa walls from pale grey to deep amber and the shadows in the gorge deepen to violet — it is genuinely one of the great free spectacles of Italian travel.
A secondary, less-visited viewpoint sits at the end of Via Roma on the eastern tip of the promontory, where you look back along the full length of the cliff with the Lente valley below — better for morning light and almost always deserted.
The Gorge Walk Below
For a completely different perspective, follow the signed path from Porta di Sovana down into the gorge itself. The walk takes about 20 minutes and delivers a worm's-eye view of the cliff face, with the town's foundations, carved cellars and hanging gardens looming overhead in a way that makes the engineering achievement feel even more improbable.
The gorge floor is cool even in August and thick with ferns, wild mint and blackberries — bring a bottle of local white wine and make an afternoon of it.
