La Piccola Gerusalemme — The Jewish Quarter
Pitigliano sheltered one of Tuscany's most vibrant Jewish communities from the 16th century onward, earning the nickname La Piccola Gerusalemme. The restored ghetto tucked into the tufa beneath Via Zuccarelli is one of the most evocative and least-visited Jewish heritage sites in all of Italy.
The Synagogue and Underground Complex
The beautifully restored 17th-century synagogue on Via Zuccarelli 1 is the centrepiece of a remarkable underground complex that includes a kosher butcher's shop, a bakery where unleavened bread was prepared, a ritual bath (mikveh), a wine cellar and an oil press — all carved into the tufa and connected by narrow passages.
The complex operated continuously until the racial laws of 1938 forced the community to disperse, and the careful restoration work completed in the 1990s means you can walk through spaces that feel genuinely inhabited rather than museumified.
The Living Legacy of the Quarter
Above ground, the quarter's narrow alleys — particularly Vicolo Manin — retain their intimate scale, with mezuzah marks still visible on doorframes and Hebrew inscriptions carved into lintels.
Every year in late summer the town hosts the Festa della Piccola Gerusalemme, with music, food and guided tours that bring the community's history vividly back to life — check local listings for exact dates.
The Jewish cemetery outside town walls, on the road toward Sorano, is rarely visited and quietly moving, its Hebrew-inscribed stones half-swallowed by grass above the gorge.
