Rocca Paolina Terrazza & Viale Indipendenza Belvedere
Perugia sits on a ridge at 493 metres and rewards those who seek its edges with jaw-dropping panoramas over the Tiber valley, Lake Trasimeno and the Apennine foothills. The best two-for-one viewpoint experience in the city combines the underground Rocca Paolina with the belvedere terrace just outside it.
Inside the Rocca Paolina
Pope Paul III had an entire medieval neighbourhood demolished in 1540 to build his fortress-palace, and the buried streets survive intact beneath it. Escalators now carry you through this ghostly underground city — Via Bagliona still has its original shop fronts and stone doorways — emerging at a terrace overlooking the lower city and the valley.
The subterranean route is free, open daily and genuinely eerie in the best possible way. Street artists and occasional installations occupy the vaulted spaces, making each visit slightly different.
The Belvedere Above
Climb the external ramp to Viale Indipendenza and walk to the iron-railed terrace at the western tip. On a clear morning — and Umbria has many — you can see Lake Trasimeno glinting 20 km to the west, with olive groves and cypress alleys stitching the valley floor below.
Sunset here is spectacular: the light turns the stone city amber and the valley fills with violet shadow. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset and stay for the afterglow.
