Mercato Coperto di Perugia
Tucked beneath Piazza Matteotti in a vaulted underground hall, Perugia's covered market is the real grocery run for locals and the most delicious orientation tour a visitor can take. The smell of black truffle, aged norcineria and fresh bread hits you on the stairs down.
What to Buy and Taste
Stalls overflow with Umbrian black truffle paste, cured meats from Norcia, aged Pecorino di Fossa, lentils from Castelluccio, and hand-rolled strangozzi pasta. Several vendors offer free tastes — accept every one.
Pick up a paper cone of porchetta from the roast-meat counter near the entrance and eat it on the steps of Piazza Matteotti while watching Perugian life swirl past. It costs about €3 and is one of the best snacks in Umbria.
Timing Your Visit
The market runs Monday to Saturday mornings, with the widest selection before 12:30. Saturday is busiest and most atmospheric, with a small outdoor extension spilling onto the piazza above.
A handful of wine and olive-oil producers set up seasonal stalls; November is prime time for new-harvest extra-virgin olive oil tastings — green, peppery and extraordinary straight from the press.
