Monte Tezio & the Sentiero della Dorsale
Just 12 km north of Perugia's centro storico, Monte Tezio rises to 960 metres and offers a half-day hike through oak and holm-oak forest to a rocky summit with a 360-degree panorama that takes in Perugia, Assisi, the Tiber valley and on clear days the snowy Sibillini range. It is the city's best-kept outdoor secret.
The Hike
The classic route starts from the hamlet of Civitella d'Arna (reachable by car in 20 minutes from central Perugia) and follows CAI trail 180 through Mediterranean scrub and open pasture to the summit cross. The ascent is 550 metres over about 5 km — moderate, with no technical difficulty.
The summit plateau is grazed by semi-wild horses and cattle, giving the landscape a high, lonely quality unusual this close to a regional capital. In spring (April–May) the meadows are carpeted with wild orchids.
Practical Details
The descent can be varied by looping through the Bosco di Sant'Apollinare, a dense oak forest with a ruined medieval church at its heart — atmospheric and rarely visited. Total round-trip: 10–12 km, 3–4 hours.
Carry water; there are no facilities on the mountain. The trailhead at Civitella d'Arna has a small car park. A local bus (line 13A from Perugia's Piazza Partigiani) runs to Civitella but with limited frequency — check APM Perugia schedules.
