Sentier des Douaniers – Pink Granite Coast
Few coastal paths on earth stop you dead in your tracks like this one. The Sentier des Douaniers threads seven kilometres between Perros-Guirec and Ploumanac'h, weaving between boulders the colour of smoked salmon that glow almost neon at sunrise and sunset.
The Path Itself
The trail hugs the shoreline so tightly you can hear waves slapping the base of the granite stacks below your boots. Rounded, otherworldly boulders — some the size of houses — have been sculpted by millennia of wind and salt spray into shapes that fire the imagination: turtles, rabbits, Napoleon's hat.
The full out-and-back walk takes roughly two and a half hours at a leisurely pace, but most people slow to a dawdle because every bend delivers a new composition of pink rock, turquoise water and white surf. Wear grippy shoes; the path is well-maintained but the rock surfaces can be slick after rain.
Best Times and Lighting
Golden hour is transformative here. Arrive at Plage de Trestraou about an hour before sunset and walk west toward Ploumanac'h; the low light turns the granite a deep, burnished rose that no filter can improve upon.
Midsummer mornings before 8 a.m. are blissfully uncrowded and the sea is often glassy calm. In September the heather behind the path blooms purple, adding a second layer of colour to an already extravagant palette.
