Parco Naturale Regionale Dune Costiere — Torre Canne to Torre San Leonardo
Stretching along the coast just 12 km east of Ostuni, this protected coastal park preserves one of the last intact dune systems on the Adriatic — a rare ribbon of juniper scrub, umbrella pines and fossil dunes backed by wetlands that attract migratory birds in spring and autumn.
The Dunes and the Sea
The park runs for roughly 8 km between the resort village of Torre Canne and the watchtower of Torre San Leonardo, and the coastline here feels genuinely wild compared to the developed beaches further north. The dunes rise up to 10 metres in places, stabilised by sea holly, marram grass and low juniper that perfumes the air on hot afternoons.
Several marked trails thread through the dune system and emerge at small, largely unsignposted beach access points. The water is shallow for a long way out, brilliantly clear and the colour of a swimming pool — a striking contrast to the rough, fragrant scrubland behind.
Wildlife and the Coastal Wetlands
Behind the dunes, a series of shallow lagoons and seasonal wetlands — the zone umide — provide feeding grounds for herons, egrets, kingfishers and, during migration, a surprising variety of waders and raptors. Bring binoculars in April–May and October–November for the best sightings.
The park also protects a remnant population of the European pond turtle and several orchid species that flower in the dune slacks in April. The park visitor centre at Torre Canne has free maps and seasonal wildlife guides.
Practical Access and Beach Days
The easiest access point is the car park at Torre Canne (free outside July–August, €5 in peak season). From there a flat, shaded path runs north through the pines for 3 km before reaching the more remote stretches of beach. Bring water and sunscreen — shade is limited on the open dune sections.
The beach at Torre San Leonardo is backed by a Saracen watchtower and is one of the least crowded spots on this stretch of coast even in August. A small beach bar operates in summer; outside June–September, bring your own supplies.
