Masseria Il Frantoio — Olive Oil Estate and Farm Dinner
Twelve kilometres south of Ostuni on the SS16, Masseria Il Frantoio is a working olive estate with trees that predate the Norman conquest of Puglia — and it serves some of the most honest, ingredient-driven farm dinners in southern Italy in a candlelit 17th-century trullo courtyard.
The Estate and Its Ancient Olives
The Balestra family has farmed this land for generations, and the estate's 700-plus olive trees include specimens estimated at over 1,000 years old — gnarled, hollow-trunked giants that produce a peppery, grass-scented extra-virgin oil of exceptional quality. You can walk among them freely when visiting for dinner or a tour.
The on-site frantoio (oil press) dates to the 18th century and is still used during the October–November harvest. Visiting during harvest season — when the air smells of crushed olives and the press runs day and night — is a genuinely rare agricultural experience.
The Farm Dinner Experience
Dinner at Il Frantoio is a fixed, multi-course affair that changes nightly based on what the kitchen garden and local suppliers have produced that day. Expect 10–12 small courses: wild herb frittatas, fried zucchini blossoms, homemade pasta with ragù, grilled lamb, local cheeses and a parade of preserves, pickles and infused oils made on the estate.
The setting is the stone courtyard strung with lanterns, surrounded by terracotta urns of herbs and the low hum of the countryside at night. It is communal dining — you share long tables with other guests — which makes for unexpectedly good conversation.
Olive Oil Tasting and Accommodation
Daytime visits for guided olive oil tastings can be arranged in advance. The tasting covers three to four of the estate's oils alongside local bread, raw vegetables and a short explanation of harvest and pressing — far more educational and personal than any shop tasting.
The masseria also offers rooms and suites for overnight stays, which allows you to walk the groves at dawn before other visitors arrive. Rates are mid-range for the quality; book directly through the estate website for the best price.
