Belvedere di Porta Nova Panorama

Just outside the ancient gate of Porta Nova, a curved stone terrace drops away to reveal a sweeping panorama that takes in centuries of Puglian landscape in a single glance — olive groves, red-soil farmland and, on a clear morning, a thin silver line of Adriatic Sea.

The View That Stops You in Your Tracks

The belvedere sits at roughly 218 metres above sea level and looks south and east across the Valle d'Itria. On exceptionally clear winter days you can pick out the silhouette of the Gargano promontory to the north and the faint outline of Albania across the water.

The foreground is equally arresting: an unbroken carpet of ancient olive trees, many of them over a thousand years old, stretches to the horizon. Puglia produces roughly 40 percent of Italy's olive oil, and this view explains why.

Best Times to Visit

Sunrise is magical but logistically demanding — the old town gates open early and the walk up from the car park takes about ten minutes in the dark. Far easier is the hour before sunset, when the light turns the white buildings behind you amber and the plain below goes gold.

In winter, after rain has cleared the air, the visibility is extraordinary and the terrace is almost deserted. Bring a jacket; the hilltop wind is sharp even in April.

Combining with a Stroll Along the Old Walls

A short stretch of the 15th-century defensive walls runs east from Porta Nova and can be walked freely. The parapet gives a different angle on the rooftops and church domes of the centro storico and is far less visited than the main belvedere.

Look for the carved coats of arms embedded in the wall stones — Aragonese, Angevin and local noble crests that chart 500 years of ownership in a single afternoon's walk.
