Santo Spirito Quarter
Cross the Ponte Vecchio and keep walking south until the souvenir shops thin out and the trattorias fill up with Florentines — you have arrived in the Santo Spirito quarter, the most authentically lived-in corner of Oltrarno. Here, Renaissance palaces share cobblestones with wine bars, antique workshops and a Sunday flea market that smells of beeswax and old leather.
Piazza Santo Spirito
The rectangular piazza is the neighbourhood's open-air living room: students lounge on the church steps, nonnas gossip on benches, and the surrounding bars set out tables that stay full from aperitivo until midnight.
Brunelleschi's unfinished church of Santo Spirito faces the square with a plain, almost austere facade that hides one of the most harmonious interiors in Florence — cool, rational and flooded with pale light.
Artisan Workshops & Wine Bars
The streets radiating from the piazza — Via dei Serragli, Via Sant'Agostino, Borgo Tegolaio — are lined with botteghe where bookbinders, gilders and furniture restorers still work behind half-open shutters. Peek in; most are happy to chat.
For wine, duck into Il Santino (the bottle-shop annexe of Buca Mario's rival, Trattoria Sant'Agostino) or the legendary Il Magazzino on Piazza della Passera, a tiny square that feels like a film set.
Sunday Morning Flea Market
Every Sunday morning a small organic and artisan market sets up in Piazza Santo Spirito, selling local honey, vintage prints, hand-thrown ceramics and sourdough bread. It wraps up by 14:00.
Combine it with a coffee at Bar Ricchi on the square's north side — standing room only, perfectly pulled espresso, and a front-row seat to neighbourhood life.
