Palazzo Pitti & Boboli Gardens

The Medici's second — and ultimately grander — home sprawls across a rusticated stone facade so wide it dwarfs everything around it. Inside, five separate museums compete for your attention; outside, the Boboli Gardens climb the hill behind in a cascade of fountains, grottos and cypress allées that feel like walking through a Renaissance painting.

The Palatine Gallery

The Palatine Gallery on the piano nobile holds one of the world's densest concentrations of High Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces — Raphael's La Velata, Titian's Portrait of a Gentleman, and multiple Rubens canvases hang frame-to-frame in gilded rooms exactly as the Medici arranged them.

Unlike the Uffizi's chronological hang, the Palatine is arranged for aesthetic impact: walking through it feels like being inside a collector's obsession, which is precisely what it was.

Boboli Gardens

Laid out from 1550 onward, the 45,000-square-metre Boboli Gardens are one of Italy's earliest and most influential examples of the Italian formal garden. The amphitheatre behind the palace, the Neptune Fountain and the Isolotto island pool are the headline set pieces.

Less visited: the Grotta del Buontalento near the main entrance, a Mannerist fantasy cave encrusted with fake stalactites, shells and Michelangelo casts — genuinely bizarre and wonderful.

Practical Strategy

Book tickets online in advance, especially May–September. A combined ticket covers the Palatine Gallery, Royal Apartments, Gallery of Modern Art, Costume Gallery and Boboli Gardens — excellent value if you give yourself a full morning.

Enter the gardens from the Annalena Gate on Via Romana to avoid the main palace crush and start from the quieter southern end.
