Bardini Garden (Giardino Bardini)
Sandwiched between the Boboli Gardens and Piazzale Michelangelo, the Bardini Garden is Oltrarno's best-kept secret — a hillside garden of baroque staircases, wild woodland, a wisteria pergola that explodes into violet in late April, and terrace views over Florence that rival anything from the more famous viewpoints. On a weekday morning you may have it almost entirely to yourself.
The Garden Itself
The garden climbs steeply from Villa Bardini through formal parterres, past a belvedere terrace, through an English-style woodland section and up to a meadow at the summit. The variety of atmospheres packed into a single hillside is remarkable.
The baroque staircase lined with terracotta pots is the photographic centrepiece, but the real magic is the wisteria tunnel in late April and early May — a 100-metre canopy of cascading purple flowers that smells extraordinary.
The Views
The upper terrace offers a southwest-facing panorama that is arguably more intimate than Piazzale Michelangelo — you see the Ponte Vecchio, the Uffizi corridor, the Duomo and the hills beyond, but without the tour-group noise.
Bring a picnic; sitting on the grass at the top with a view like that and a bottle of Vernaccia is one of Florence's great free-ish pleasures.
Café & Practical Notes
The Villa Bardini at the garden's base houses a small café with a terrace and a rotating exhibition space — worth checking what's on before you visit.
Enter from Costa San Giorgio (near the Forte di Belvedere) or from Borgo San Jacopo via a small gate. The uphill entrance from Costa San Giorgio is steeper but more dramatic.
