Rocher de la Virgen, Biarritz
A narrow iron footbridge leads from the centre of Biarritz to this dramatic sea-stack, where a white statue of the Virgin Mary has watched over Basque fishermen since 1865. The 360-degree view from the top — crashing waves below, the Pyrenees on the horizon, the red-roofed villas of Biarritz behind — is one of the most cinematic in all of southwest France.
The View & the Walk
The footbridge itself, suspended above churning Atlantic swell, gives you a taste of the exposure to come. Once on the rock, a short spiral staircase leads to the viewing platform where you can see the entire Basque coastline from the Spanish border at Hendaye to the long surf beaches stretching north toward Hossegor.
At low tide, the base of the rock reveals sea caves and rock pools teeming with anemones and small crabs — worth exploring before or after the climb, especially with children.
Best Time to Visit
Sunset in summer is the obvious draw, and the warm Atlantic light turns the whole scene amber and rose. But stormy winter afternoons, when the Côte des Basques surf is running at three metres and spray flies over the bridge, are arguably more spectacular and entirely crowd-free.
The rock is a five-minute walk from the Grande Plage and the ornate Casino Municipal, so it fits neatly into any afternoon stroll through central Biarritz.
