Brasserie Le Noailles, Bordeaux
Planted on the lively Place du Palais since 1898, Le Noailles is the kind of brasserie that makes you feel like a local within minutes — zinc bar, mosaic floor, waiters who move at a confident clip, and a chalkboard full of seasonal Gironde produce. It is the definitive place in Bordeaux to eat entrecôte à la bordelaise with a carafe of Saint-Émilion.
What to Order
The entrecôte bordelaise — a thick slab of Bazas beef finished with a bone-marrow and shallot sauce — is the non-negotiable dish. Follow it with canelés, those dark, caramelised rum-and-vanilla pastry cylinders that Bordeaux invented and nowhere else quite replicates.
For lunch the two-course formule is outstanding value: expect duck confit, seasonal asparagus from the Landes, or a whole grilled sole depending on the week. The wine list leans heavily and wisely on Bordeaux appellations at fair brasserie prices.
The Setting & the Scene
The terrace faces the golden-stone Porte Cailhau, a 15th-century city gate, making it arguably the most photogenic lunch spot in central Bordeaux. The interior retains its original Belle Époque woodwork and mirrors, and fills with a satisfying mix of market traders, lawyers from the nearby Palais de Justice and wine-trade professionals.
Reservations are recommended for dinner on Friday and Saturday; for lunch on weekdays you can usually walk in before noon or after 1:30 p.m.
