Parc National du Mercantour Day Trip
Less than 90 minutes north of Nice by road, the Mercantour National Park delivers a landscape so dramatically different from the palm-lined Promenade that it feels like another country — glacial valleys, ibex on rocky ridges, lavender meadows and 4,000-year-old Bronze Age rock engravings at the Vallée des Merveilles.
The Vallée des Merveilles
The park's most extraordinary attraction is the Vallée des Merveilles near the village of Tende: a high-altitude cirque scattered with over 40,000 Bronze Age petroglyphs carved into smooth rock faces between 1800 and 1500 BC. Figures of oxen, daggers, human forms and geometric patterns cover the glacially polished stone in a density that is genuinely overwhelming.
Access requires a guided walk of around 4–5 hours from the Lac des Mesches car park at 1,400m altitude. The site is only accessible July–September due to snow; book a certified mountain guide through the Tende tourist office well in advance as numbers are limited.
Wildlife & Landscape
Mercantour is one of the best places in France to see ibex (bouquetin) in the wild — the rocky ridges above the Vésubie valley hold healthy populations and sightings are common on morning walks. Chamois, mouflon and golden eagles are also regularly spotted.
The park encompasses eight distinct valleys, each with its own character. The Vallée de la Vésubie, reached via the village of Saint-Martin-Vésubie (1,000m altitude), is the most accessible and offers excellent waymarked hiking trails through larch forests and past mountain lakes without requiring a guide.
Getting There from Nice
The most practical approach is by car: the A8 motorway north from Nice connects to the D2205 through the Vésubie valley. The drive itself — through increasingly dramatic gorges and past perched medieval villages — is part of the experience. Rent a car in Nice for a day or two; public transport into the park is limited.
The village of Saorge, perched above the Roya valley on the eastern edge of the park, is one of the most dramatically sited medieval villages in France — its terraced stone houses cling to a near-vertical cliff face above a river gorge. It's a 90-minute drive from Nice and deserves a stop even if you go no further into the park.
