Colline du Château (Castle Hill)
Climb or ride the free lift from the Promenade des Anglais end of the old town and you'll be rewarded with the finest 360-degree view in the city — terracotta rooftops, the glittering Baie des Anges and the snow-capped Alps on a clear winter day.
The View & the Ruins
The hill takes its name from a medieval fortress demolished by Louis XIV in 1706; only a few scattered stones remain, but the panorama they frame is magnificent. Stand at the belvedere above the port and you can watch the Corsica ferry carve a white wake across the deep blue Mediterranean.
A waterfall — artificial but genuinely pretty — cascades down the eastern cliff face into a shaded pool, making it a favourite spot for locals escaping the midday heat in summer.
Getting Up & Staying Longer
The free panoramic lift runs from street level near Tour Bellanda at the eastern end of the Promenade des Anglais; alternatively, 300 steps through a pine-scented staircase keep it honest. A third option is the path from the Vieux-Nice side, winding past a small cemetery where members of Nice's old Genoese families are buried.
Pack a picnic from the Cours Saleya market below and settle on one of the grassy terraces — this is exactly what Niçois families do on Sunday mornings, and it feels entirely local despite being one of the city's top sights.
Best Times to Visit
Sunrise here is quietly spectacular: the light turns the old town's ochre and coral facades a deep amber while the sea stays silver. Arrive before 8 am in summer and you'll have the terraces almost to yourself.
At dusk, the hill becomes a romantic vantage point as the street lamps of the Promenade flicker on one by one — bring a jacket, as the breeze off the sea sharpens quickly after sunset.
