Étang de Fontmerle Nature Reserve
Just minutes from the Mougins commercial zone yet feeling utterly removed from the Riviera's glamour, the Étang de Fontmerle is a protected 11-hectare lake and wetland reserve that shelters herons, egrets, terrapins and rare dragonfly species within a forest of umbrella pines.
Walking the Lakeside Trail
A flat, well-maintained 2 km loop circles the lake entirely, passing through stands of Aleppo pine, reed beds and open water meadows. The path is suitable for all fitness levels and pushchairs, and interpretive boards (in French and English) identify the plant communities and bird species you are likely to encounter at each section.
Early morning is the most rewarding time: grey herons stand motionless on the reed margins, little egrets stalk the shallows, and the surface of the lake reflects the surrounding pines in perfect stillness before the day-trippers arrive. In spring, the reed beds ring with the song of warblers.
Wildlife and Seasonal Highlights
The reserve is home to the European pond terrapin, a species in decline across southern France, which can often be spotted basking on half-submerged logs along the southern bank. Dragonfly enthusiasts will find the lake particularly rewarding in June and July when up to 20 species have been recorded in a single morning.
In autumn, the lake attracts migrating waterfowl including pochards and teal, while the surrounding pines fill with short-toed treecreepers and firecrests. The reserve is managed by the Mougins municipality and entry is free year-round — making it one of the best free experiences on the entire Côte d'Azur.
