Sotos y Riberas del Río Segura Greenway
Stretching along both banks of the Río Segura as it passes Molina de Segura, this protected riparian corridor is a world away from the town's urban bustle — a green tunnel of poplars, tamarisks and reeds alive with birdsong and the sound of running water. It is the best free nature experience within walking distance of the town centre.
Wildlife & Landscape
The sotos (riverside woodlands) along this stretch of the Segura are designated as a protected natural space within the Region of Murcia, sheltering species including the common kingfisher, little egret, night heron and several bat species that emerge at dusk. Spring migration brings warblers and flycatchers to the reed beds, making it a rewarding spot for birdwatchers with binoculars.
The riverside path passes through working huerta plots where farmers still irrigate using an acequia system — a network of water channels with Moorish origins — giving the walk an agricultural texture that feels authentically Murcian rather than manicured.
Walking & Cycling Routes
A well-maintained paved path runs for several kilometres along the Segura, accessible from multiple entry points in Molina de Segura. The flat terrain makes it ideal for cycling, and local families use it as a weekend leisure route throughout the year.
Early morning is the best time for both birdwatching and photography: the light is soft, the path is quiet and the mist sometimes sits in the river bends in winter and autumn. Bring insect repellent in summer evenings when mosquitoes are active near the water.
