Cerro del Castillo Viewpoint
Climb to the hilltop where a Moorish fortress once commanded the Segura river plain and you are rewarded with one of the most sweeping panoramas in the Murcia interior. The castle ruins are modest, but the view — stretching across citrus groves, the winding river and distant sierras — is genuinely spectacular.
The View & the Ruins
The original Islamic-era fortification was largely dismantled after the Christian Reconquest, but the elevated promontory retains its dramatic strategic logic. From the highest point you can trace the course of the Río Segura as it threads south-west towards the city of Murcia, flanked by the intensely cultivated huerta that has fed this region for millennia.
On clear winter and spring days the Sierra de Espuña is visible to the south-west, its forested ridgeline dusted with snow after cold fronts. To the north-east, the industrial outskirts of Molina give way surprisingly quickly to open countryside — a reminder of how compact the town really is.
Getting Up There
A signed footpath leads from the edge of the old town up to the summit in around 20 minutes on a well-maintained track. The ascent is gentle enough for families with older children but wear proper shoes — the path is stony in places.
Sunset is the magic hour: the low light turns the huerta gold and the town's rooftops shimmer below. Bring water and a light jacket even in summer, as the hilltop catches the breeze.
