Casa Emilio – Traditional Murcian Cuisine

A Molina institution for decades, Casa Emilio on the edge of the town centre is the kind of place where local families celebrate communions and businessmen linger over a long lunch — both reliable signs that the kitchen is doing something right. The menu reads like a love letter to the Murcian huerta and the region's pastoral traditions.

What to Order

Start with a zarangollo murciano — a silky scramble of courgette, onion and egg that looks deceptively simple but demands the right olive oil and patience. Follow it with caldero del Mar Menor if it is on the daily menu: a saffron-scented rice dish cooked in a clay pot with locally sourced fish, a recipe the staff will tell you has barely changed in generations.

The house dessert of paparajotes — lemon-tree leaves coated in a sweet batter and fried until crisp — is the definitive Murcian sweet and a perfect excuse to order a second coffee. Pair the meal with a bottle from the nearby Bullas DO wine region, whose garnacha tintorera reds are underrated and excellent value.

Atmosphere & Booking

The dining room is cheerfully unfussy: tiled floors, white tablecloths, framed photographs of the town in earlier decades. Service is attentive without being formal, and the staff are accustomed to explaining regional dishes to curious visitors.

Lunch (14:00–16:30) is the main event in Spanish dining culture and Casa Emilio is no exception — arrive by 14:15 to secure a table without a reservation on weekdays, or book ahead for Friday and Saturday.
