Regata Storica delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare (Minori Rowing Festival)
Every year — rotating between Amalfi, Venice, Genoa and Pisa — the Regata Storica delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare brings a flotilla of eight-oared gondolins and hundreds of costumed participants to the host city. The Race and the Spectacle
Eight rowers per boat compete in traditional gondolins — narrow, flat-bottomed racing craft — over a triangular sea course, while the hillsides above are packed with spectators. The race itself lasts under 30 minutes, but the real show is the costumed historical procession beforehand: hundreds of participants in 11th-century dress parade through Amalfi's streets to the waterfront, accompanied by drummers and flag-throwers.
Even in years when Amalfi is not the host city, the local rowing club — Circolo Canottieri Amalfi, which trains partly out of Minori — holds preparatory regattas on the bay that are free to watch from the beach.
How to Make the Most of It
Book accommodation many months in advance if you plan to attend the main Regata in an Amalfi-host year — the entire coast sells out. Minori's beach and lungomare offer some of the best free vantage points for watching the sea race without fighting the crowds in Amalfi town.
Outside the main event, Minori's waterfront is a great place to watch the canottieri (rowing club) training sessions on calm mornings — a window into a sporting tradition that has shaped coastal identity here for centuries.
