Basilica di Santa Trofimena
Minori's patron saint, Trofimena, is said to have arrived on these shores by boat in the 7th century, and the basilica built in her honour contains one of the most atmospheric underground crypts on the entire coast — a candlelit chamber housing her silver reliquary that most visitors to the Amalfi Coast never find.
The Church Above and Below
The main basilica, rebuilt in the 19th century, is pleasant but unremarkable. The revelation is the lower church: descend the stairs at the front of the nave and you enter a Romanesque crypt dating to the 11th century, its low vaulted ceiling supported by ancient columns and its walls lined with ex-voto offerings — silver hearts, painted panels, crutches — left by grateful devotees over centuries.
The silver urn containing the saint's relics sits at the centre of the crypt and is brought out in a grand procession each year on 5 November, Minori's most important religious festival, when the whole town turns out in medieval costume.
A Quiet Moment in Town
The basilica faces a small piazza just off the main lungomare — easy to walk past without noticing the entrance. Step inside during the late afternoon when the light filters through the nave windows and the crypt is lit only by candles, and you'll have one of those rare, genuinely quiet moments that the Amalfi Coast rarely offers in summer.
There is no admission charge; a small donation box is by the crypt entrance. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) as the church is an active place of worship.
