Terrasse de Meudon
Perched on a wooded plateau above the Seine valley, the Terrasse de Meudon delivers one of the most sweeping panoramas of Greater Paris you will ever find — and almost no tourist buses. On a clear day the Eiffel Tower, Sacré-Cœur and La Défense all line up across the horizon like a postcard you get to keep.
The View Itself
Stand at the stone balustrade in front of the former Château-Neuf de Meudon and the entire Paris basin unfolds below you — the Seine glittering in loops, rooftops fading into a blue haze, the Eiffel Tower unmistakable on the left bank.
The terrace faces roughly north-northwest, which means late-afternoon light floods the scene in gold. Photographers should arrive an hour before sunset for the best colour and the softest shadows on the city below.
What Surrounds the Terrace
The elegant building immediately behind the viewpoint is the Observatoire de Meudon, a working astrophysics research station of the Paris Observatory. Its great dome and the ruins of the old royal orangerie give the hilltop a quietly aristocratic atmosphere.
A short walk through the adjacent Forêt de Meudon leads to shaded picnic clearings — locals bring wine and charcuterie on Sunday afternoons, and the whole scene feels more Burgundy village than Paris suburb.
