Restaurant Le Camélia, Bougival (near Meudon)
Just a short drive along the Seine from Meudon, in the neighbouring riverside village of Bougival, Le Camélia has held a Michelin star for years under chef Thierry Conte. The dining room looks directly onto the river, and the cooking is rooted in classical French technique with a lightness and seasonality that feels entirely modern.
The Cooking
The menu changes with the seasons but expect impeccable sourcing: line-caught sea bass with a beurre blanc sharpened by local verjuice, Challans duck lacquered with honey and Sichuan pepper, a cheese trolley that could anchor a meal on its own. The lunch menu (two or three courses) represents extraordinary value for one-star cooking.
The bread basket — a rotating selection of sourdoughs and enriched rolls baked in-house — arrives warm and is quietly one of the best things on the table. Do not wave it away.
Setting and Practicalities
The terrace in summer hangs over the Seine bank, and watching pleasure boats drift past between courses is a particular kind of French happiness. The interior is calm, cream-toned and unhurried — a room that makes you slow down.
Bougival itself is worth a slow stroll before or after lunch: it was the favourite retreat of Monet, Renoir, Berthe Morisot and Camille Pissarro in the 1870s, and the light on the river that seduced them is still there, unchanged.
