Forêt de Meudon
Stretching across nearly 1,100 hectares of rolling plateau between Meudon, Clamart and Vélizy, the Forêt de Meudon is a genuine old-growth forest managed by the French national forestry office — with marked trails, towering oaks, and a silence that is hard to believe exists this close to the capital.
Trails and Terrain
The GR 2013 long-distance footpath passes through the forest, but day-walkers are better served by the colour-coded ONF circuits starting from the Carrefour de la Lune, a scenic crossroads at the forest's heart. The blue circuit (about 7 km) loops past ancient coppiced oaks and a small étang (pond) where herons fish at dawn.
Mountain bikers and trail runners have colonised the eastern slopes, where sandy singletrack cuts through bracken and silver birch. The forest floor is carpeted in bluebells in late April — one of the most underrated wildflower spectacles in Île-de-France.
Wildlife and Seasons
Roe deer are common at dusk, particularly along the Allée des Closeaux. In autumn the forest turns a deep amber-gold and the smell of wet leaves and wild mushrooms draws foragers armed with wicker baskets — cèpes and chanterelles appear after September rains.
The Étang de Trivaux, a quiet pond near the Clamart edge of the forest, is a recognised birding spot: great spotted woodpeckers, treecreepers and, occasionally, short-toed treecreepers are recorded here year-round.
