Mercato Settimanale di Martina Franca

Every Friday morning the streets around Via Madonna della Neve and the adjacent car parks erupt into one of the liveliest weekly markets in the Valle d'Itria — a sprawling mix of fresh produce, local cheeses, clothing and household goods that draws farmers and shoppers from across the Murgia plateau.

What to Look For

The food section is the main draw: stalls piled with fat Fasano tomatoes, braided burrata still warm from the caseificio, wild chicory and lampascioni (bitter grape hyacinth bulbs, a Pugliese delicacy), and jars of local conserve — roasted peppers, sun-dried figs stuffed with almonds, and sott'olio artichokes.

Cheese vendors are particularly worth lingering at: look for aged cacioricotta, fresh ricotta sold by the scoop, and the occasional round of aged canestrato pugliese wrapped in straw.

Arrive before 9 am for the best selection and to watch the market come alive — by 10:30 the prime stalls are picked over and the crowds thicken considerably.

Beyond the Food

The non-food section stretches along the outer ring and sells everything from linen tablecloths embroidered in the local style to cheap ceramics, tools and seasonal clothing — it is wonderfully chaotic and authentically un-touristy.

A handful of vendors sell second-hand goods and vintage linens; with patience you can find hand-embroidered cotton sheets and old ceramic tiles for very little money.

By 12:30 pm the market begins to pack up; the surrounding bars fill with market-goers eating panini and drinking espresso, and the whole street takes on a festive, communal atmosphere.
