Belvedere di Villa Comunale
Perched on the southern edge of Martina Franca's old town, the public gardens of the Villa Comunale contain a stone belvedere terrace that offers one of the most quietly spectacular views in all of Puglia — a vast, undulating panorama of the Valle d'Itria dotted with trulli rooftops, olive groves and red-roofed masserie stretching to the horizon.
The View & When to Go
On a clear morning the view extends south-east all the way to the Adriatic coast near Fasano — a shimmering silver line on the horizon beyond a patchwork of dry-stone walls and almond orchards.
The best light is in the two hours after sunrise when the valley is still slightly misty and the trulli of Alberobello (visible to the north-west) catch the low golden rays; sunset is equally dramatic, painting the limestone plateau in shades of amber and rose.
Bring binoculars if you have them — from here you can pick out individual masserie, the conical rooftops of trulli clusters, and the dark smudges of ancient olive groves that have been worked continuously for centuries.
The Gardens Themselves
The Villa Comunale gardens are a lovely destination in their own right: shaded by mature maritime pines and oleanders, they contain a small bandstand, a children's play area and several benches that are colonised by elderly locals playing cards on weekday mornings.
The gardens are free to enter and open from early morning until late evening; they are particularly pleasant in May when the roses along the central path are in bloom.
A small bar kiosk near the entrance sells coffee and granita in summer — grab a granita di mandorla (almond slush) and settle on the belvedere wall for a long, unhurried look at the valley.
