Bosco delle Pianelle Nature Reserve
Just 5 km south-east of Martina Franca, the Bosco delle Pianelle is one of the largest and best-preserved stretches of native downy oak and manna ash forest in the entire Murgia plateau — a WWF-protected reserve of some 1,100 hectares where you can walk for hours without seeing another soul.
Walking the Reserve
The reserve is threaded with well-marked trails ranging from easy 3 km loops to a full 12 km circuit of the forest perimeter; trail maps are available at the WWF information point at the Via Pianelle entrance.
The forest floor in spring (March–May) is carpeted with wild orchids — Ophrys species including the bee orchid and the mirror orchid are abundant here, along with cyclamens, wild asparagus and the occasional paeony. Birdwatchers should look up for short-toed eagles, hoopoes and the lesser spotted woodpecker.
In autumn the forest turns a burnished gold and the air smells of damp leaves and wild mushrooms; locals come to forage for porcini and cardoncelli (oyster mushrooms) in October and November, though you need a regional permit to pick them.
Practical Tips & What to Bring
The reserve is free to enter and open year-round during daylight hours; the main access point is on the SP109 road towards Crispiano, where a small car park and an information board mark the trailhead.
Wear sturdy shoes — the limestone paths can be slippery after rain and some sections cross rough karst terrain with exposed rock. Bring water, as there are no facilities inside the reserve.
The best seasons to visit are spring (for orchids and birdsong) and autumn (for colour and fungi); midsummer can be oppressively hot and the forest is at its quietest and least rewarding in the dry July–August period.
