Centro Storico & Piazza Plebiscito
Martina Franca's whitewashed old town is one of the most intact Baroque ensembles in southern Italy, a labyrinth of curlicued balconies, carved doorways and sun-bleached lanes that seem to glow at dusk. The heart of it all is Piazza Plebiscito, anchored by the imposing Basilica di San Martino and the Palazzo Ducale, both dripping in ornate limestone detail.
The Piazza & Its Monuments
Piazza Plebiscito is the social and architectural centrepiece of Martina Franca — a wide, travertine-paved square ringed by 17th- and 18th-century palazzi that have barely changed since the Caracciolo dukes held court here.
The Basilica di San Martino dominates the eastern flank with a theatrical facade of twisted columns and writhing cherubs; step inside to see the gilded nave and the surprisingly moving fresco cycle in the transept.
The adjacent Palazzo Ducale, now the town hall, opens its frescoed piano nobile to visitors and hosts exhibitions — don't miss the grand ceremonial rooms painted with mythological scenes.
Wandering the Trulli-Less Lanes
Unlike Alberobello a few kilometres north, Martina Franca's old town rewards slow, directionless wandering rather than tick-box tourism — duck down Via Cavour and Via Mercadante to find flower-draped archways and tiny shrines tucked into corners.
The neighbourhood is fully lived-in: neighbours hang laundry between balconies, nonnas chat on stone steps, and the smell of baking bread drifts out of shuttered windows on weekend mornings.
Evening is the best time to be here — locals pour into the piazza for the passeggiata around 7 pm, the limestone turns amber in the last light, and every bar sets out tables on the cobblestones.
