Ribeira Sacra & Cañón do Sil Day Trip
Just 45 minutes south of Lugo, the Ribeira Sacra wine country unfolds along the dramatic gorge of the Sil river — terraced vineyards cling to near-vertical slate slopes, Romanesque monasteries perch on clifftops and boat trips glide silently between canyon walls that rise 500 metres above the water. It is one of the most spectacular landscapes in Spain and remains blissfully undervisited.
The canyon boat trip
Catamarán do Sil operates daily boat excursions from the village of Os Chancís near Parada de Sil, sailing deep into the canyon where the silence is broken only by birdsong and the occasional waterfall. The 1.5-hour round trip passes beneath the Romanesque Monasterio de Santo Estevo (now a Parador hotel) and several abandoned hermitages carved into the cliff face.
Book tickets in advance in July and August — the boats fill quickly and there are only a few departures per day. The early morning sailing has the best light for photography.
Wine and monasteries
The Ribeira Sacra DO produces some of Spain's most distinctive white wines from the Godello grape and reds from Mencía — grown on terraces so steep that all harvesting is done by hand. Stop at Adega Algueira in Doade for a cellar visit and tasting with views straight down into the Sil gorge.
The Monasterio de Santa Cristina de Ribas de Sil, accessible via a short forest walk from the road, is one of the finest Romanesque churches in Galicia and sees a fraction of the visitors that Santiago de Compostela attracts — walk around its apse at dusk and you may have it entirely to yourself.
