Mirador do Bosque de Ramil
Most visitors never leave the Roman walls to find this wooded hilltop park on the northern edge of the city, but those who do are rewarded with sweeping panoramas over the Miño river valley, the old city skyline and the green patchwork of Galician farmland stretching to the horizon. It costs nothing and crowds are almost non-existent.
The view and the walk
A short uphill path through eucalyptus and oak leads to a granite belvedere where the entire Roman wall circuit is visible below you — a perspective that makes the scale of the fortifications suddenly click into place. On clear days the Serra do Courel mountains are visible to the east.
The park itself is a pleasant green lung with picnic benches, making it a favourite weekend escape for Lugo families. Pack a sandwich, a wedge of tetilla cheese from the market and a bottle of Ribeira Sacra white wine for a perfect low-key afternoon.
