Pulpería A Garnacha
In a city that takes pulpo á feira more seriously than almost anywhere else in Galicia, A Garnacha on Rúa Nova has built a fierce local reputation for serving the definitive version — boiled to silky tenderness in copper pots, sliced on a wooden board, drizzled with local olive oil and dusted with pimentón de la Vera. It is simple, ancient and absolutely perfect.
What to order
Start with a media ración of pulpo á feira and a clay bowl of caldo gallego (a hearty broth of white beans, greens and pork). The house Ribeiro white wine is poured from a ceramic cunca (bowl-shaped cup) in the traditional Galician style — slightly cloudy, bracingly fresh and absurdly cheap.
If octopus isn't your thing, the lacón con grelos (cured pork with turnip greens) is a winter staple that tastes like Galicia on a plate. Portions are enormous by any standard.
The atmosphere
The interior is classic pulpería — bare wooden tables, stone walls, the faint sweet smell of paprika in the air and a noise level that suggests everyone is having a very good time. It fills up fast on weekends; arrive at 13:30 when it opens for lunch or expect a wait.
Staff are brusque in the affectionate Galician way — don't expect a lengthy menu explanation, just point at what the table next to you is eating.
