Museo Provincial de Lugo
Housed in a former Franciscan convent whose cloister alone is worth the visit, the Museo Provincial de Lugo holds one of the finest collections of Roman artefacts in northwestern Spain alongside extraordinary pieces of Celtic (Castro culture) goldwork that will genuinely stop you in your tracks. Entry is free and the crowds are light even in summer.
The Roman and Celtic collections
The Roman rooms display mosaics excavated from beneath the city streets, surgical instruments, jewellery and everyday objects that make the ancient city feel startlingly close. The star piece is the Paleo-Christian mosaic from the 4th century — its colours remain vivid after 1,700 years.
The Celtic goldwork gallery is extraordinary: torc necklaces, lunulae and earrings crafted by Castro culture artisans in the first millennium BC demonstrate a level of technical sophistication that surprises most visitors. These are not replicas — they are the real objects pulled from Galician soil.
The convent cloister
The 18th-century baroque cloister at the heart of the building is one of the most beautiful architectural spaces in Lugo. Its stone arcades frame a garden of camellias and hydrangeas, and the silence inside is a genuine relief after the bustle of the Roman walls promenade.
Allow at least 90 minutes for a thorough visit; the ethnographic section on the upper floor, covering traditional Galician rural life, is frequently overlooked but genuinely fascinating.
